OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) – – The life of a disc jockey can be exciting, and now local kids are learning how to rock the turntables.
Glenn Lewis, also known as DJ Animale, teaches a handful of Gilder elementary school students in 3rd to 6th grade how to DJ and mix music with the Kids Can! After school program.
The 8-week program is part of the STEM-Smart Academy, and there is also another session.
“To me, it’s just something that gives them all the opportunity to learn something that is interesting to them and gives them something positive and creative outlet,” said Lewis.
The kids learn to build, make the beats, and mix their own music. Sixth grader Korgen Tegeder says he saw it on YouTube and is looking forward to cutting the vinyl.
“I enjoy it because I like to play around with music and it is fun to interact with and change songs that you already know,” says Tegeder.
At the end of the 8-week program, the children show the other children in the afternoon program a show. Children can! hopes to expand it to other schools soon.
